Can or should Neo's be mounted?
I have a Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird' and this really cool new piece of Mopani hardwood. I was wondering if Neos can be mounted or will it dry out too quickly? I know they like their water, so I was thinking that the mount wouldn't be too far from the humidifier in my orchid enclosure so it wouldn't dry too quickly.
I think it would look really terrific on this piece of wood, but I'm not sure if the plant would take to this kind of treatment. Any thoughts? If so, how should I go about doing it? Any different techniques I should try? |
I have 2 out of 3 of mine mounted, kept outside, and they are doing great!! Still youngsters, so no bloom yet, but growing like weeds, rooting all over the wood! I have mine on cork.
Good luck with yours :) |
I have one that has been mounted for two years now, it has roots all over the place and is just starting to spike,
I spray it every day. |
But you guys live on the more humid coasts, especially Jklelee. I'm so jelous of being able to grow outside. With annual humidity of somewhere around 14%, outside growing is not in the cards here in Colorado.
Any other thoughts before I start in on mounting my Neo? What type of cord or attachment wire, line, pantyhose do you all use to get the plant to stick to the wood and for how long? |
HI Chas
I have one (Neofalcata)which I grow indoors - I have had her since April last year and she has doubled in size & at the moment putting out lots of new roots. hope this helps ( It is mounted on cork with spagh tied on with fishing line) |
Hi All,
I have a Neo benisuzume mounted on a piece of cork and it is doing exceptionally well and is making offsets like crazy!! When I received it, I potted exactly like my other two Neo's and it just sulked. At one point, I thought I was going to loose it as the roots kept rotting. Out of desperation, I mounted it on a piece of cork and I haven't looked back! It is currently making new roots again and is definately happier!!. My suggestion is that the more delicate varieties should be mounted on cork, or something similar. In my opinion, they seem happier mounted! Regards, Craig Gibbon |
The first Neo I ever purchased was mounted, and it had super long roots on her, so I can only assume she must have loved it. It did not however love my growing conditions at the time and promptly died, I have a terrible time with the mounted chids due to humidity issues.
