New Arrivals--Onc/Den advice needed
2 Attachment(s)
I just got a box of mixed orchids. I'm totally excited, but also a little nervous. So far, I've only had phals. Any advice is appreciated. The pix show two phals that came in the box. They came in those containers, and I haven't checked the medium yet. I repotted the rest yesterday all in one swoop.
Onc. Carnival Costume (which arrived with flowers still on it) Bllra Tropic Tom 'Kinky' Wils Pacific Perspective Pacific Heat (two of these) D. Ck Ai Dka x cannaliculatum (Huh?) Blc. Golden Tang I threw them all on the bookshelf, but I hope to find better locations for them once I figure out their lighting needs. Please help if you can--thanks! |
Someone with a more experience will jump in here soon...
But for me, the inter-generics have been very easy to grow. It seems most are happy with medium to high light. I've successfully bloomed them in a West window and where they are protected from the afternoon sun. The Blc will need more light than they do, I have all my Cattleya crosses under lights. |
How exciting! I generally grow in bright light. I use a south-facing window with a sheer curtain. That way they get super bright light, but it does not burn the plant. Some of my oncs show a bit of a red colouring to the leaves, so that is obviously the most they can handle.

All intermediate to warm growing. All except the Phals grow in moderate to bright light.
If you've never grown Oncs and their intergeneric crosses, they grow crazy fast. I had an Onc 'Twinkle Fragrance Fantasy' and I swear it was the biggest weed next to some of my Pleuros at the time. |
I think you'll find the wilsonara and beallara will do better if kept a bit cooler than the others.
A bit of digging also led me to a better name for your den: it's D. (C K Ai 'Oka' x canaliculatum), which has been registered as D. Pumpkin Patch. |
