So I'm trying the Den nobile type again with Den. Spring Dreams!

The guy said that I need to stop watering cold turkey when all the flowers drop off. Do we have any agreements to this? Nobile people? advice? I've already killed one of thee.. I'd like to not do it again :(

And the next one is.... an unnammed Catt of some sort! I forgot to get a tag for it... so it is a noID  But is preeeeettyyyyyy, AND fragrant!

Hey there Niki! Beautiful choices!

On the watering advice for the nobile Den...It seems to me like the guy you got it from has it backwards. After the blooming period is when it will put its energy into new growths. (As you can see, it already has the beginnings of a new cane coming up.) It'll want the water and fertilizer then. They should NOT be watered or fertilized once the new canes stop growing in the late fall (ie. they get a "winter rest") Watering & fertilizing should resume when buds appear in the spring.

Oooh, thanks Yvan. Last year I spoke to a vendor that didn't speak much English.. this year... I may have heard him wrong, or he was mixed up or... who knows! there were SOOOOOO many people there! :faint:

Nice plants!! That's a cool name for an orchid society...the "artistic" orchid society :D Are you a member? I bet they do some cool stuff.

Nah.. I'm not a member there. I think you actually HAVE to speak Chinese. I don't even think they care if it's Cantonese or Mandarin... but you have to communicate in Chinese :(

I'm thinking about joining one of the other 2 societies I'm surrounded by though. We have the Southern Ontario Orchid Society in Toronto, and the Royal Botanical Orchid Society in Burlington. I live right in the middle!

That yellow/red catt was quite the stunner..I believe I saw the tag as being Tokyo Magic which is a pretty popular hybrid...however, google images shows photos that are a bit different, so maybe they were mislabeled or my memory isn't working right.

You should definitely consider joining the SOOS - Ive been a member for over 3 years now, and its pretty fun. We need some fresh blood :)

I agree with Yvan's advice. When they are actively growing (now) they like lots of water and are heavy feeders. I have one that looks a lot like yours. Both of my nobiles start their cold dry rest period on Halloween and I think about bringing them back inside on Valentines Day. You should start tapering off the fert the end of August but keep watering until the end of October. Cool temps combined with very bright light are what triggers blooming in these guys.
