To Cut..or Not to Cut [dend and cymb]
:waving Not sure what to do when my Cymbidium and Dendrobium are done blooming. I've heard some orchids bloom from the same spike the next time. I just don't want to cut off something that might have flowers next year?:( Thanks in advance for any ideas/answers.

Hello
cyms will not bloom again from an old spike - go ahead and cut those I am not sure if there are any dens that bloom of of old spikes but I don't think so - some dens rebloom off of old canes but the spikes die when the blooms are done |
As far as i know, there is only the Phalaenopsis(and its hybrids) that may bloom from the same spike several times.
But theres is several other chids that may bloom from the same bulb/canes. But they are growing new spikes every time. |

I agree, the cym's spike can be cut off, it work rebloom. As for the den, I don't think there are any dens that rebloom from the same spike. What kind of den is it?
Lene, there are other orchids that bloom off an old spike, other than phals. Species tolumnias can rebloom, and so do some masdies (there is a second bloom on the spike after the first one fades, but the spike looks deadish!) and I think(?) psychopsis also bloom off old spikes. |
:hello Thank you all, so much!! I'm not sure what kind of a Dend it is:scratchhead:I was told its a phal type.
Thanks again everyone, really appreciate it!! http://www.orchidboard.com/community...dendrobium.jpg |
If it is like mine, which I have also been told is of the phal type, then I don't think it will bloom off the same spike again.
On mine the flower spike comes out the top of a cane, I can't see if that is the same as yours from the pick but it looks like it may be. I was advised to cut the flower spike back to close to the top of the cane when it had finished and that is what I have done. My understanding is that on this type of Den the flower spike grows from the top of a cane when the cane has finished growing, and you need a new cane to get a new spike. Mine is currently growing a new cane and I'm hoping it will flower when that finishes growing. |
Thanks for the correction *s*
I find that i learn something new every time i read a tread, and that is just why i find this comunity superb! :D |

I have a Dend, and the flowers are simulare looking, exept the colors. When i bougth it, there where several flowers on a spike growing out from the top. After the flowers had wiltered, i cut the spike off. Just a few weeks after, there was emerging a new spike, just below the top leaf, on the same cane. And now there is another spike emerging from under the second top leaf. Still the same cane. :) Does this mean that it is not a phal type of Dend? It is a noid, so i dont know mutch about it. |
I'm afraid mine is also NOID so I'm not sure, I'm just passing on what I was told about mine as it looks similar from what I can see in the pic... that it only flowers once on a cane and the spike should be removed.
