dendrobium nobile
 

hi guys i have problem... well i live in the tropical area and i have this nobile it looks decidious to me... anyway my problem is it wont bloom. ive tried boosting with floral fert and im sure sun is not a problem here. anyway... is it true dat cold temp could trigger the bloom? ive ask someone- and silly as it sounds he said to water them with cold water... anyway if u have tips for me ill be glad to try it... thanks

I'm afraid that it won't bloom unless you give it cool temps... :/
But I don't have too much experience with that- mostly because that what I had mentioned :)

Temperature could be the trigger (I don't know den nobile specifically) and cooler water may not be as silly as it sounds.

I am trying to prompt growth in mine and water with water on the warm side. There is a good chance that cool water will prompt flowering in a plant which needs that coolness to trigger it.

This is what works for my nobiles. I withhold water from about the end of October. Leave them outside until the first frost, then bring them in . I do not begin watering until I see new buds..around Feb. They seem to need colder temps at night during the fall to trigger flowering.

I dont grow Dend nobile (the species, not a hybrid) here in Hawaii because it is too warm. I think that Manilla is warmer than here so you wont be able to bloom the plant, unless it is one of the warmth tolerant varieties. Using cool water will not work because you should not be watering the plant during dormancy but you could try throwing the plant in your refrigerator at night. Make sure it is totally dry though! FYI, Ive never done this before so cannot vouch for this plan! If this does not work, I think you would have to give your plant away.

i kinda like the idea putting them in the fridge... ok ill just wait for the young ones to mature.. then ill just put them in the reefer!

Dendrobium nobile needs a decided cool rest in the winter although you are in a similar situation to me ( in Bangkok ). We managed to flower a few plants this year which I took to be a far cooler "dry period " than normal. The cooler period was from late November to late December, early January & was long enough to induce a few plants to produce buds which are now open.

OK, so I thought I had it rough here in Colorado's cold, dry in the winter - hot and dry in the summer conditions. Hmmmm...
