Bulbophyllum rothschildianum

So I got this orchid on e-bay, a Bulbophyllum rothschildianum, and as I was researching it I came across conflicting info. I know common pollinators of this group are flies, meaning putrid scented flowers. But one source told me that this variety, the rothschildianum, smells like ripe peaches while another source says that this variety smells like bad fish. Anyone out there actually grown or smelled this species?:scratchhead: I'm excited either way, the blossoms are so unique in this Genus. Oh yeah, does this one like to be mounted? Im a newbie also so if anyone has cultural tips that would be cool.

Don't know specifically about rothschildianum but an educated guess is that any Bulbo would do well, mounted. Their rhizomes and roots wander so the more room to roam, the better. Most of mine are in teak vanda baskets and new growth always finds its way through those slits. Also have a couple in tree fern pots and the roots love attaching to them. Keep wet, heavily fed, high temps, low to intermediate light and it should grow well for you.

Hello there,

I grow bulb. rotschildianum in a vivarium with poison dart frogs, so high humidity (100 % at night).
It is mounted on a large piece of wood, some roots grow in the air, others slowly try to penetrate the wood. Haven't noticed anything about the smell.
Nice plant , flowers stay in bloom for fortnight.

greetings

POISON DART FROGS!!! Amazing! Thanks for the info. I just got it. Should I let it become more established? It consists of 1 backbulb and one small pseudo bulb with one leaf. Is this Genus specific to one leaf per bulb? By the way, is it hard to aquire poison dart frogs? Oh, its probably different in france. What an exotic collection of flora and phauna.

Hi there Tulasi,
indeed, it's 1 leaf for every bulb and only flowers on the bulb that has grown last year,
oh by the way, the french and dutch flags are identical but the dutch stripes are horizontal and the french vertical (that's the end of this lesson)

greetings

moos

Thank you for the education, it is truly appreciated!:D I cant wait to see these flowers! I hop our French and Dutch counterparts will pardon me too.:_(
