Hello everyone ! :hello
First sorry for my english. I am from France, Paris, but I am working in Shanghai, China, as a teacher. 2 days ago, I bought an orchid at a local market in Shanghai. The lady of the shop told me the name in chinese  (something like : Golden Silk orchid). I did some research over internet and, if I am not mistaken, I think this orchid may be a Cymbidium ?? It is inside a glass vase full of water. Here are some photos. :photo: Thanks for your precious help ! Have a great day ! :waving Roman |
Roman:
That looks more like something in the iris family to me than an orchid. It sort of looks like one of the Acorus sp. to me. Adam |
I think I would have to agree, it doesn't look like an orchid let alone a cymbidium unless its one thats never been seen before which I couldn't believe.

Looks like a variegated water iris to me.

Thank !
Hi and thanks for your help ! Impressive!:bowing
So I wonder if the Chinese lady knew it was not an orchid  or she just doesn't know. But I will go back to the market and tell her. Anyway, I am not disappointed at all, this plant and its flower will look great in spring.:dance13: Thanks again, Roman |
I don't know the correct name but the person that gave me one called it an orchid plant , but it is a form of walking iris
|
There is a variety of varigated cymbidium ensifolium called "Golden Silk Horse Tail", but it doesn't look like the plant you have there.
Let us know how she react when you tell her it's not an orchid :goodluck: |
You know, there are a lot of plants out there that are called 'orchid' something or other, that aren't. Orchid cactus, orchid lilly are a couple that come to mind. It can be confusing to us orchid folks, but it does happen.
