First 2 weeks in S/H... photo report

Hey everybody. Thought I'd share a few photos of my plants that are loving their new S/H medium. First is Phal Wedding Promenade, bought in bud & with 4 more spikes. Had roots like crazy, so I put it in S/H and it has just taken off beautifully!

The rest are:
Onc Twinkle Red Fantasy
Den NOID from Lowe's clearance - rebounding nicely with 3 new growths
huge Phal NOID in its 8 inch monster pot

Thanks Ray for your help in getting these guys repotted!

Great pictures, they all look so happy in the s/h.

I need to get some current photos. These are doing well, especially the phals. Surface roots on the wedding promenade don't look so great... shriveling, but it's blooming like crazy and leaf growth is good. The little leaf on the Phal noid has gotten much larger, and it has some new green tips to its previous roots. Whatever else it is doing is beneath the p/a surface, but it seems happy.

The dens noid... well I just don't have good luck with these guys at all. I separated one of the keikis off this guy and it's in water culture developing a new root right now. Will put in s/h if it gets roots growing vigorously. All my other dens were slowly dying (root rot) in s/h and stopped growing new roots. They are back in ziplocs with sphag. I'm about ready to give up on dens completely as I've killed them in nearly every medium now.

Twinkle looks fantastic, keeping pbulbs nicely plumped up. there's now about twice the # of pbulbs I had when I repotted into s/h.

Others... maxillaria ten. had new pbulbs when repotted, but they have not grown since repotting. Stayed exactly the same size and root growth stopped. New pbulbs are plump and healthy, old ones more shriveled. Doesn't seem to matter if I water more or less, always looks the same. Had a fungus problem a week or two in, but resolved that pretty easily.

HD bag-baby cattleya - looks awesome with two new growths/spikes at the same time.

Pot. Little Toshie - just repotted into s/h after new growth turned out to be non-flowering. Has new roots and looks good so far.

Onc. Sharry Baby - is just a baby but looks good so far.

Onc. Sweet Sugar - flower spike stayed nice looking for a long time, but I can't seem to keep the pbulbs plump. It has a new pbulb growing. I'm worried that I rotted the roots trying to force it to take up more water for the largest pbulb. It looks upset with me.

Will try to get some photos posted shortly.

This is the rest of what I've got in s/h currently.
(Not counting an ascocenda which looks awful but is 100% experimental).

These were described in the above post. Photo titles give their names.

I'm thinking about giving S/h a shot ....but I'm kinda lost on picking out the right pot size.. the one i am thinking about doing is in a 3 inch clear pot now,do i get the same size? or just use the same pot its in now?

Thanks for telling us how they are doing! It's nice to hear how newly transfered plants are doing after two months. I really want to try s/h, but since I move around a lot the pots would be way to heavy for me to transport all the time.

Hi Eric,
Unless the plant is really root bound I'd use the same pot. Just be sure to wash it real well, use a mild bleach solution and rinse until you can't smell any more bleach.
