Masdevallia decumana - NOID Resolved
1 Attachment(s)
I took this picture at the Botanical Garden in Basel. The plant grows in the warm-intermediate greenhouse.
Does anybody has an idea which species it is? Masdevallia sp. is the only thing to be read on the label... |
That thing is just too beautiful to not have a name! I would really like one of these!
|
me too :) that's why I am interested in the name.. :)
in two weeks, there is an orchids show at the Botanical Garden. We (the local Orchids Society in Basel) have been asked to show some of our plants there. I will most probably bring some of my plants, and will then try to find out whether anybody has a clue about the ID of this plant, and if it possible to have a division of it :) let's see... |
Maybe it's Masdevallia decumana ? (courtesy of Orchidwiz of course! I'm obsessed with that software)
|
hhhmmm... Thanks Camille, it could be... however, the blooms were not hanging as in decumana... and the plant grows warm to intermediate (decumana is a cold grower), and with warm.intermediate, I mean 60 - 80F which is the temp in this greenhouse...
|
I've heard it can grow intermediate as well. I suppose heat stress in not such an issue if sufficient water is given to it. Especially if maybe the water cools the plant off sufficiently.
According to my book, the peduncles of M. decumana are horizontal, 3-5 cm long. Does that help? |
hey Tindo, thanks... actually, I also think it can be decumana, as Camille and you said. Maybe, a warmer ecotype? If it can grow intermediate, maybe that really is decumana... in the greenhouse, temps as between 60 and 80F (let's say 68 - 75 in average), very high humidity and a lot of air movement...
|
It cannot be anything but decumana. There is no other species that has that form and coloring.
|
Well, its a beauty and I never even considered it before you posted it, even though I have seen it a million times in my book.
