Morning from chiily south Florida

I've been a member since sometime in early '06. I've just seldom posted. Unable to sleep and looking for something to read, I followed a link from my email and started reading with interest the many posts on the forum.
I've been a "plantaholic since a child. I not only grow orchid species and primary hybrids...I grow bromeliads, gesnariads, begonias, ariods and many others that are considered tropicals.
I'm so jealous of the ability to take really good pictures. There are so many great photographers on this site. I'm hoping to glean some knowledge for taking fantastic photos.

Welcome aboard. Don't be shy.... Keep up the posting. As for photography..... Theres no need for jealousy..... Theres one or two professional photographers here to make us all jealous. I myself don't care what others think of my photos. You can see the plants that i have taken photo's of. I'm proud of the plants..... who cares about the photo.

Thumper, it's nice to see you've decided to get more involved on the board!

We're not picky about the quality of pictures here...sure, the perfect pictures make us all  but even the not-so-perfect ones do that ;)

We are looking forward to hearing more from you...and seeing :photo: of your collection :cheer:

I would absolutely agree with the above. There is NO room for jealousy on this board, PERIOD! All of us love to see what out there...gives all food for thought....keeps our brains engaged in something productive...and trust me when you get to be an old F@^$ like me, you need that kick in the @$$; coffee just doesn't do it anymore! But back to the thread and your request about pictures. There are no secrets...The picture, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder....that would be YOU! Some basics that make one pic stand out more than another are things like correct exposure and focus. Since so many people use automatic "point and shoot" cameras, these things may be difficult to control. If the lighting and focus are good any picture looks good and we like to look.... so start shooting and don't worry about comparing yourself to others!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome.
I promise to share as things bloom. I've got the personal perfection bug and I long for the "just go with the flow" bug. It doesn't pertain to others...just with me.
Thanks again for the welcome.

I'm going to post one of my crappy photos just to make you feel better.

Gwen...that is a beautiful group shot of some lovely Phals.
I promise I will post a few shots.

I think I see the problem with your photos :photo:

Looking at your avatar, I think you have your camera backwards :twocents:

I'm sorry --- I couldn't resist ;)

I disagree. I love the plants, but the photos provide a permanent record of your success and of the the beauty of the flowers.

Taking good photos is not as difficult as it seems. Get a good piece of black or dark blue cloth or find a plain colored wall - that makes the biggest difference. Then a cheap tripod and you're on your way to better photos even with a cheap camera. It helps too to put just a little thought into your pictures. Think about "how is this going to look when I'm finished? and learn to look at the whole of the picture that's in your viewfinder. Also, leave some space around the flowers for cropping - not too much because you don't want to lose the flower in the picture - but enough to make some adjustments.
