NOID Cymbidium Flower

I was basically uninterested in cymbidiums... until this opened in front of me last night!

Got this for my dad for Christmas (in bud, no idea what the flowers would look like other than "not round like other cymbidiums" - the buds were dark purple and elongated, coming to a point at the end) so it's been sitting in my room for a few days. Just started opening last night and I love this plant! nice dusty pink colour and nice smell to it - sort of like a rose.

Second flower on the first of three spikes will be opening tomorrow.

Kip,

The closer the hybrids are to the original species, the starrier and more open they will be. Most hybridizers over the years have worked to get a "rounder, fuller" flower. This is the type favored by judges and, in my opinion, also gives one more flower to look at. :twocents:

Really I'm the one who looks after them all & this way he won't be able to go out and buy one I don't like

Very interesting! I hadn't seen any like this before to be honest, I thought they were all sort of like this. I think I prefer the star shaped flowers (I guess I'm all Phal.'ed out, round flowers just don't do it for me anymore ;) ). I think once you've got a full spike open these can be just as impressive.

Here's another pic with slightly better colour balance (closer to the actual colour). Looks like two of the spikes will open just fine with two more buds likely to open tomorrow/day after. A bit of bud drop on the third spike but might still get 3-4 flowers off it if lucky.
