Cym. dayanum
 

Hello all,

I just aquired a cym. dayanum - am wondering if I can leave it outside as I do my other hybrid and noid cyms?
Doesn't even usually drop to freezing here tho will a few nights in Jan. and Feb. Right now the over-night lows have been upper 30s - low 40s.

The Cym. dayanum is also found in the highlands of Taiwan where the winter night temp. is usually about low 50s or up 40s but may sometimes drops to upper 30s when cold front arrives. The sepecies is also native to south Japan so it should be resonable that the species can tolearte low temp. But it should also be noticed that the habitats have remarkable day-night temp. difference, it will have high day temp which is about up 50s or higher than low 60s.

You should be able to grow this one outside where you are at; I have one in my collection (though I grow under glass here in Michigan), I put my cymbidiums out May-October, the rest of the time they are kept with 44F nights...and whatever temp the gh reaches during the day (the vents open at 76F)...if it is supposed to freeze in your area, just put them in the garage for the night.

I have multiple clones of Cym. dayanum and, as we live in the same relative area here in California, my advice to you is to keep it warm in the winter. It will grow and survive if left outside in our area, but will not bloom with the proliferousness of which this species is capable.

not a problem where I live! it is typical for 20 -30 degrees difference between days and nights

ok - so for a good bloom it would be better to keep the plant warmer ...

So - I don't keep my house very warm overnight - so maybe the best thing is to keep it inside til the over-nite lows are a bit higher ?

Would an east facing window be sufficient light?

Short of a greenhouse, this would probably work for the time that we have freeze warnings and temps in the 30's at night. I have even put one about 3' back from a south facing bay window, which gets direct sun most of the morning, with no ill effect. Level of humidity could be more, but the temps are more important at this time of year.
