dendrobium what?
Following the success with my last query about an incorrectly labelled plant, I have another puzzle that i could do with some help on.
This is another Dendrobium that has been living on a shelf in my bathroom for several years. the plant label in the pot has faded, and become almost impossible to read. The first word is obviously 'Den.' but the species name is much harder to discern. It appears to have about 14 letters and our best guess after trying out various techniques is 'monochigdianum', but this doesnt match any name that I can find. The 'dianum' bit is still just about there, but what comes before is less obvious although it certainly appears to start with an 'm'. The plant has long slender canes, about the thickness of a pencil at most, and they are about 400mm long. Leaves are narrow and pointed. Thanks in anticipation. |

Could you take a picture of the label and post it for us?

Thanks for the help earlier. Having scanned the label ( why didnt I think of that?) and massaged it, it is labelled as 'Dend. fairchildianum', which would appear to be an incorrectly named Den. faichildiae.
Picture of label attached, hopefully ...and with the image enhancing an 'f' came to light at the beginning. I will try to post a picture of it within the next few days but currently away from home. |
a picture of the plant would also help... :)

When it blooms, you will know for sure if that is correct. I would keep this photo until it blooms for you just incase it isn't correct, but I am not sure what else it could be, it is still pretty hard to read. I did see on a website called B&T World Seeds a listing for a Dendrobium fairchildianum, I wonder if they have a typo on their website somehow? Here is the link: Dendrobium fairchildianum from B & T World Seeds

OrchidWiz shows a Den. fairchildae, and Den. fairchildiae. There is also a Den. fairfaxii.

Yes I typed fairchildianum into google and it came up with B&T as well. I cannot remember where I picked up this plant, as I have had it for a few years now. It had been struggling a bit - I don't think that it finds conditions in my bathroom in any way similar to its native habitat (about 1100m lower and 20C cooler!).
There seems to be a lack of rigour on the part of the growers that I buy from. I will eventually get a list together of the plants that I have and see if it throws up any more anomalies. Until I found this board I had not really been corresponding with any other keepers, apart from the occasional visits to Burnham Orchids nurseries. |
