Just a few questions
 

I haven't had my orchid long, since Sept. So I don't know much about them. I have a Phal. next to my kitchen sink. Someone sprayed "Off" bug repelent on it and now it's lost it 3 flowers and there are brown spots on the leave where the bug spray was. When I noticed the spray I rinsed the plant thoroughly. Is the plant in jeoperdy?


Does any one know any thing about propagating these plants, I reall like them and want not only more but more of a variety. Since I have a Phal already I thought I'd start with that.

I don't think the bugspray will cause any long term damage, since you rinsed it off, just keep an eye on it and make sure it isn't showing any signs of stress. It'll probably be ok.

I don't know anything about propagating these beauties but I'm sure someone here will have some info for you! Here's any interesting link I ran across, hope it helps!

I don't absolutely know that the insect repellent will kill off your chid but certainly there could be chemicals in the spray that would/could damage the leaves and cause the flowers to drop. Since I don't know the time line for this situation happening, this may be a "day late and a dollar short", but you might want to place the chid in the sink and wash it again and flush water through the medium. The leaves may just have some chemical damage.....digital pics are always welcome and helpful to getting good info about situations with your plants.

Hey Swamprat, Welcome to the OB!

I agree with iphrog, besides loosing some blooms the plant should be ok. Orchid propagation can get pretty involved, but lots of folks out there are doing it. Without knowing what you had in mind, my best advice is to look around in the propagation section of the OB. There is a ton of info on Phal node culture, pollination and seed germination, inducing keikis, etc. That's the best place to start.

just my 2 cents worth....be careful NOT to wet the "crown" when you wash it off - or you may end up giving it 'crown rot ' (middle where leaves come out)

Nenella's advice is very important but don't go crazy if water gets in the crown, just use some paper towel and gently remove it. As long as the crown isn't wet overnight, you should be OK. The other thing you will see mentioned by some people are Physan or RD-20 to help decrease fungal and bacterial diseases in their plants. It is mixed and sprayed on the plants and pots and just all over...and it helps with algae control.

I was gonna say... but Swamprat just make sure the phal is not being over watered either.

I'll get some recent pics up real soon...The only pics I have are when it flowered. Basicly the flowering of the plant from start to finish, none of the damage done


I did rince the medium, leaves, and flowers thuroughly and the plant seems to be well. There is new growth on the roots and they are attaching themselves to the bark medium.
