Actually the latest studies/DNA support that Trudelias are more closely related to Vandas then any other orchids according to Vanda expert Martin Motes. You can grow your alpina just the way you have it, but I prefer Vanda baskets or mounting ( my Trudelia/Vanda cristata is mounted ) You may have to water more often but the roots get to grow out the bottom of the basket and it is almost impossible to over water them in this mode. As a result, root rot/fungus doesn't happen. Trudelias alpina comes from the Himalayan regions of Nepal so they supposedly can take it a little colder. I have had no problems with Vandas into the 90s ( as long as you water ) or temps in the low fifties.
