Great photo's and beautiful blooms Roy! Now I know what to look for if my Aerides houlletianum ever decides to bloom for me. I decided to try giving it higher lighting thinking it wasn't receiving enough light to bloom, but now it is getting these weird blotchy redish-purple spots on the leaves and new growth. I know this is a sign of it receiving the max amount of light it should be getting, but now I am wondering if I should back the lighting away some? Do you have any cultural/growing recommendations?

Becca, I find that growing these plants out of their natural environment is very easy but time consuming getting the conditions right and their placement in your growing area right. I found that too much light caused leaf burn and no flowers and the same with too much shade. The blotching on the leaves you mentioned to me seems about right light but watch for leaf yellowing. I have an Aer. lawrenceae v Sanderianum that has flowered every year for the last 4 years that I have had it, not this year and I haven't shifted its place in the house. The plant is over 1 meter tall and growing well.

Thanks Darren, you reckon the quinquevulnerum is worth an award??

It could be, I can't remember the last time I saw an Aerides in a show let alone one of award quality so I'm not always the best person to ask (I need to go north to some shows I think).

It's a great display though and would be worth considering.

Nice Aerides you have there Roy. I also like my aerides and grow some outdoor here in South East Queensland. You must be doing a good job growing them down in Vic. The flower on my lawrenceae sanderianum looks just like yours. That quinquevulnerum purpureum is one i need to get some time to. Haven't got it yet. Very nice. Keep up the good work.
