You have to love a nice Protea! They grow well in Australia and many people have them as they are similar to our native trees.

Thanks for the photos.

Yes I noticed how similar the banksia's are and the blood red Waratah when I was therein 2006, I tried to get some waratah seed to germinate here , but no luck. Protea seed only germinates after a fire so we wrap the seed in paper and set fire to it , the seed will then germinate . is it the same for waratah seed ?

I think it could be the same for Waratah seeds. There are a number of Australian native trees that germinate either after a fire or after exposure to smoke.

I will see if I can find something more specific, I have friends who grow Australian and South African Native trees and they will know for sure.

Thanks Bolero , Much appreciated I still have some seed and would love to have a Waratah in my garden , my friends would blow their minds as to where I got this blood red "protea' as you don't see them here

Waratah culture can be tricky even to grow here. They need some specific culture and don't like to be too hot or dry.

Maybe I can find a link as well.
