Dendrobium Medy Stripe
Greetings everyone I'm new to this site and hoping someone might be able to resolve my question.
I have a Dendrobium that has a tag on it that says Medy Stripe. I have been unable to find out what culture this requires. I have other Dendrobiums but can't find anything on culture on this breed. Thank you Donald Worcester,MA:waving |
Hi Donald, I can't identify your 'chid but wanted to :welcome: you to OB. Lots of knowledgeable people on the board and I'm sure someone else will chime in .

It's most likely a phal-type Dendrobium. Just lump it with the rest.
|
Well, If I "lump" it with the rest that are nobile types, and this in fact is a phal type, I'll have one dead plant.
|
I think that Royal Orchids means that you should treat it like all the other Dendrobiums that need no particular rest period, like the phal- types, unlike the nobile/ deciduous types.
I only have nobile types, so somebody else may be able to tell you the culture of your variety :) Cam |
That's exactly what I meant - lump with the rest of the phal-types. I just assumed you had others like it. A winter rest is (in my mind) a special treatment. No special treatment necessary, dry rest or otherwise - that's what I meant. ;)
BUT, remember that was based on a total guess. We can't be sure its a phal dend until someone smarter than me chimes in.:) |
Thank you Royal. I will post some pics for all to see.
Greatly appreciated. Donald |
Donald, I have this one (Medy Stripe). It is an old one! I have had this one for at least 8 years. It is very easy to grow for me in south Florida and blooms every year. I will send pics when I get home from work. Where are you? Are you growing outside or in the house?

Here are pics of my Medy Stripe. It last bloomed in March. It grows outside year round, plenty of sun and rain. It is very crowded in its pot but seems happy. :)

Donald, welcome to the OB! :waving
This is actually the very first orchid I bought when I moved to Florida over 3 years ago. It has since been divided (via keiki) into 3 plants, the original plant has 7 spikes on it right now...I'll post a pic when the buds open. I actually thought I was going to lose this mother plant, but these guys are hardy, and she pulled through with flying colors! As for culture, I would recommend strong light, such as a south facing window up there in Massachusetts, or a good artificial light source. Water it year round, allowing your medium to dry well between waterings. Fertilize weekly in the spring through summer, and taper off during the late fall and into winter when your growing will slow to a crawl or stop altogether. Susie pointed out that her plant is tight in its container...this is a good thing; these dendrobs love tight feet, so to speak. My point here is to say that it shouldn’t be repotted unless it is crawling out of the container it is in. I hope this is helpful to you. |
