Orchidarium Mister or Fogger ??
Need some advice from some of the experts here on the OB :bowing . I recently put a misting system in my Orchidarium which works fine but to me it seems the spray is not as fine as I would like. Would a fogger nozzle be better so as not to wet the 'chids' so much?
Sheridan :hmm |
Hi Sheridan! Well before I answer your question, I was just curious how big is your orchidarium (I am sure you have told us in the past but I just can't remember). My other questions are what kind of a misting system do you have, how often does it come on, and for how long each time it comes on?
I understand about the 'chids getting wet....are they not drying off quickly enough or are you just trying to be preventive of problems by not having them be wet? |
I am more for fog than mist as the water particles are finer and I think they evaporate better rather than having water sitting on the plants. I think this is better for plants prone to rotting. I would like to hear more on this topic too.
I am looking at getting an Aquafog 400 for my orchidarium (5 to 6 foot x 90cm tall x 75cm deep). Aquafog Brett |
Is there such a thing as a nozzle that would convert a misting system to a fogger for those of us like Sheridan who already have money invested into a misting system?

Hi Becca this is the second reply cause I don't know where the other reply went. Anyway my Orchidarium measures 24 wide x 21 deep x 33 high and it has an Herpmist system which I got online. It works great but the nozzle just seems to wet the orchids to much. I would like to change the nozzle to more of a fogger nozzle if that can be done. The orchids do dry by nighfall I just don't like them so wet. The mister goes on every three hours or so for about 1 minute or 2. Right now the humidity is 98% and it doesn't drop much during the day.
Thanks for the reply Sheridan |
Sheridan, can you set the on cycle shorter than a minute? That's pretty long unless you plan to handle the watering with it. Mine runs 5 seconds every 4 hours and humidity is 90-99%.

I agree with Ross....a minute is pretty long. The minimum my timer will go is something like 5 seconds, could be 3 but I can't remember....anyways....I don't even set it for that, I set it for as low as the needle on the timer will go and that usually works pretty well. Everyone's set up is different....Ross runs his completely different from mine, but we have different needs....my set up dries out quicker then his and the humidity will start to drop below 70% if I don't have mine come on every 45 minutes. If I am going to be gone a weekend then I set it to come on more often....you may just have to play with it...it took me a year to get what works for me figured out and a lot of trial and error on where to place the plants and where not to place them due to drips from the ceiling!
Hope this helps some...if you happen to find a nozzle to get more of a fog then a mist then let me know! Marty may be a good person to ask! |
Hi Ross & Becca so you think I have my mister is on to long well I will try and set it for shorter intervals. I don't know if I can. What kind of timer do you have? I think mine goes by 1 minute intervals but I will check. Gotta get to town so I will check it when I get back. Thanks guys for your input...:bowing :bowing

If you want a good timer, with 1 second intervals for a great price, then check this out, i have one and i love it!...it alows you to set up to 8 programs, each with as little as 1 second intervals!!

I have the Encore interval timer marketed by MistKing. It's shortest cycle time appears to be 5 seconds. I then set the interval for 4 hours. You may want longer - like 5-6 hours. |
