new to orchids...what do I have?

Hi,
I am completely new to orchids. I bought one on a whim late this summer at the grocery store. It grew two buds but only one opened. I think it is a white phila...something...floragrande.... I don't know. I was also recently given another that the giver described as a black pearl. It has purplish/red leave with a green undercolor. I would love to knw more about both of these. I will try to post pics. If anyone knows what these are, nd I am sure there are many who will, I would greatly appreciate some info.

Sorry my pics are so big....I don't know how to make them smaller yet.

Thanks,
Kathryn

The first one is one of the Jewell Orchids, grown primarily for its leaf color and patterns - flowers usually are small and insignificant. Second one is a Phalenopsis of some sort. Hope this helps.

Hi Kathryn :waving

Welcome to Orchidboard

As Ross said, the first one is a Jewel Orchid...this one is Ludisia discolor

The second is a Phalaenopsis hybrid...it would be impossible to come up with the actual name as there are so many hybrids out there. It is lovely :)

Here are some tips for working with photos in the forums:

If you need help with anything, feel free to ask :)

I found a pic on the board of a bloom that looks exactly like the second...it is named a Phalaenopsis flora grande. but this is good enough for me. Thanks for the help

Very nice! I love the Jewel orchid. The foliage is so pretty. The white Phal is nice too, let us know if you have questions regarding care.
