Phrag. Elizabeth Castle - watering schedule

:hello

One of the beauties I bought at our show this past weekend (funny, I still have a "smile" when I think of all the plants I managed to get this time although I should arrange for funeral services for my bank account) was a Phrag. Elizabeth Castle.

I have just checked the crosses and it is Phrag. Memoria Dick Clements X Hanna Papow. My question is if a Phrag. has even a bit of Bessae, do you still treat it as a wet growing Phrag or water every few days rather than every day.?

By the way, would you advise if lighthly watering a Bessae every day along with misting then watering heavier every few days is enough or should they be thoroughly watered every day (or stood in a dish of water.)

thanks. m

I grow all my Phrags with besseae heritage in saucers of RO water and they do very well. Were you at the Calgary show? That was a great show!

Hi Joe, do you completely water them each day or water lightly just so the water runs into the bowl beneath them then water more thoroughly on the 3rd or 4th day?

Yes I was at the Calgary Show. This year I had the opportunity to work in the administration area at the back. I was there Friday night (the pre show for members who volunteer at the show) then again on Saturday until 2pm. This year was the absolute best! I overspent like usual but got some really nice plants. I would like to come see your show in Edmonton but I don't get to Edmonton much at all. One day I will for sure. I wonder if I saw you at the show in Calgary?

regards m

I water once per week. What I do is, I empty the old water out of the saucer, then I flush the medium out well and allow it to drain. Finally I place the pot back in its saucer and water it again, allowing the drained water to collect in the saucer. I fertilize every other week (or every other watering) at 1/4 strength, adding a little tap water to the fertilizer mixture. The fertilizing process is the same as the normal watering process.

This was actually my first time at the Calgary show. I overspent too  . You probably did see me as I was there from an hour and a half before opening (waiting in the car like the addict I am) to an hour or so before closing (we ended up waiting for some relatives in Calgary to show up and go through the show with us). I went through the sales area at least 5 times and the show area at least 3 times, I would say. I was a young guy carrying around a bunch of plants (at least until I got them to the "hotel"). Definately a day to remember - I got some pretty rare plants!

Yes treat it like a wet growing one. phag besseae and schlimii are in the same group of phrags. And the sargentianum from the mem dick clements is a wet grower too.

Hey Nalini, I understand your difficulty in getting special orchids in India. MY father is an Orchid enthusiast and had the same trouble, we decided to be an importer and have been doing this for last few years. If you need any special orchids, let me know I can supply most of them to you. Presently I have flowered Paphiopedilum Exul, Bellatulum and Concolor. Please see our facebook page for more varieties and updates on latest arrivals. Nisha Orchids | Facebook
