look what i got!
 

our orchid society had their annual auction last night:faint: :evil: . i got a few new plants and 3 of them are blooming!

#1 the tag says Paph Maudiae is it a species or a hybrid?
#2 is a Cattleya noid
#3 is an Oncidium papilio
#4 is Slc. Vermillion Cherub 'The Cardinal' (one flower finishing and another bud starting on the same growth)
and #5 is a Cirr. Daisy Chain (8" basket!)

Excellent - most excellent. The maudie Paph is a type. It means a cross or something (someone has more knowledge than me here). I have several of this type and they tend to be dark colors, various shades in the dorsal and sepals. Beautiful blossom, if you ask me.

thanks ross for the clarificationon the paph! if anyone knows what the pink cattleya is please tell! the daisy chain is starting 3 growths and completing about 6 so i think i might be getting some blooms soon!

To my understanding, the term "Maudiae" refers to the large group (the laregst of all Paph groups) of Paph hybrids that includes the original hybrid Paph Maudiae (callosum x lawrenceanum) and all of the hybrids related to it. Through many generations of breeding there are countless hybrids of this type available, mainly with the species callosum, barbatum, lawrenceanum, sukhakulii, venustum and allied species in their background. Modern Maudiae hybrids are divided into three main categories by color: album (greens and whites, sometimes yellows), coloratum (pinks, reds and maroons with a green and white dorsal, often with pink on it too), and vinicolor (pure or almost pure, deep wine reds and maroons). Many can have "warts" on the petals. All are compact plants with mottled leaves and are single-flowered. Which particular hybrid this is is almost impossible to tell; it might be the original Maudiae, it might not be.

That's a nice collection of new plants you scored at the auction! It looks like a new growth coming on the Oncidium papilio. :) Sorry but I can not identify the pink cattleya for you.

I've been on a big Bulbo kick this year, have collected 12, so far. The Daisy Chain was the first to bloom for me. They're fast and prolific growers.

So, what's the Heart O' TX society like? How many members? How many at regular meetings? I'm trying to drum up a little interest around here for a local society, but I think I may be in an orchid grower dessert. There are a few of us, but I'm trying to get it rolling. The closest societies are Central East TX, they meet in Tyler (1+ hour drive) and HOS in Houston (2+ hours). You would be a 4.5 hour drive! Any tips?
