Advice for 2 new orchids please
Hello, New person here so forgive me if the answers are within the many threads already here - I need a shorcut though!
Today I took delivery of the following from Thailand in 1 1/2 inch pots stuffed with dry sphagnum moss. I have just given them a quick dip to re-hydrate. I need to pot them on and the smallest pots I can find are 3in which will be HUGE for the tiny orchids, so this is what I need to know: One is an Lc Varut Rittinan x Lc Hausermann Gale the other is a Dendrobium anosmum I currently keep some largish phals, but am new to all this so I would like to ask the best way to get going with my two new babies. Thanks:) |
Hi...welcome to Orchidboard! :waving
You can use regular Cattleya care for the Lc hybrid: http://www.orchidboard.com/Cattleya-Culture-Care-Sheet Den anosmum is one that I grow mounted. It gets very long thin canes which will produce the blooms. It looks best when hanging sideways so they can cascade. Anything mounted will need to be sprayed at the roots once a day...more often if you're in a very hot area. It takes high light. We have a number of threads on mounting if you need help with that ;) If you have a moment, it would be nice to hear more from you...what do you grow? How? Where? :) You can say hello here: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ons-break-ice/ If you have any questions, please feel free to ask...we've got a great group of friends here from all around the world :cheer: :blushing: :oops_sign I see you've already said :hello |
I also have anosmum (two mounted plants) and I found I need to give them a total dry winter rest from around end of October till the flower buds emerge in the spring. As Sue said, they bloom on last years' canes (always a year behind). Hope this helps.

Thank you - I'll need to get familiar with some of the terminology and methods! All I keep are phals and they are abundant around here, really popular at the moment but all you can buy in our garden centres are 4 inch upwards clear pots and a basic orchid compost and a standard orchid food.
I don't have lots of money so buying loads of stuff or expensive equipment is out of reach sadly, but my phals are doing so well in the basic way I'm dealing with them that a new stalk comes immediately one fades, so each plants has been working really hard! One plant has flowered 4 times in less than a year! |
Hi Flowerpot,
I also have several anosmum but since I don't do well with mountings, they are in either clay or plastic pots with standard bark mix. They also get watered once a week. John |
