...a black orchid is Maxillaria schunkeana, described in 1993 from Brazil. :)

I think there may be another species with true black flowers...

Trichoglottis brachiata, Cymbidium canaliculatun var Sparkesii, Grammangis stapelliflora ( or Grammatophyllum stapelliflorum, there is a "Black" Lady Slipper, I think it's called Cherry Black Lady Slipper.

If you go to Camp Lot A Noise Tropicals you can find Trichoglottis brachiata ... http://www.clanorchids.com/store/tr.html ... As for the others I merely googled and found the names. Hopefully paphgirl will see this thread and should be able to shed some light on the lady slipper...

Fredclarkeara After Dark is black... It is a catasetinae intergeneric. There are some others in that group.

I second Fredclarkeara After Dark. It's the closest to black I've ever seen and gorgeous to boot. *drool*

I want to add this to my collection anyone know a dealer who sales them? The Internet has not produced any good results for me. Maybe I'm just not searching for it correctly. Any help would be grateful:pray:

That is Fred Clarke himself... Last I spoke to him, he was out. I believe he is mericloning his best and they will be available soon. Maybe already, it has been a while since I've been in touch with him.

Highly recommended, he is an excellent grower and an all around nice person.

I don't think there are any *really* black paphs. The dark vini paphs are a really a very dark red. Paph. anitum is probably the darkest species (it was thought originally to be a dark version of adductum). I know they often refer to it as the black paph, but it's really not black as we think of the color (or lack thereof).
