Wrebbitrocks,
You have made at least 3 very frustrated posts. I have answered each. I too am new at this.
I wonder if you have read any overview books on orchid growing? I found that did me a lot of good. This forum is a wonderful place to get information but often it is very personalized. Books try to be more general. The two that I am going to recommend are inexpensive and direct a good portion to the new grower, trying to find what to grow and how to handle beginners conditions.
Others may criticize my first which is "Orchids for Dummies" It is an easy read and like other Dummies books has a lot of learning aids. I don't find much there that is extremely controversial. The other, which may be out of print in this title but has been replaced by a similarly well regarded book is "Ortho' All About Orchids".
These were my bibles when I first started and I still refer to them frequently.
Don't get discouraged. Assess your challenges, as you have been doing. And try to conquer them

Here is my setup:

I grow a little of everything in this window. It faces south and has 3 supplemental CF florescent lights.

Here are some of my orchids in front of windows. Both summer and winter. All is good with them. No drafts and no touching the windows are the most important things. Temps do go down, but they can handle cooler weather. Hope that helps.
Those books are great beginner books. I think they have excellent "how to" pictures along with the instructions.
A great website to find second hand books...including textbooks for college (coming right up for you perhaps?) is CampusI.com | Buy Textbooks | Sell Textbooks | Used College Textbooks | New College Textbooks | Textbook Price Comparison | Cheap Textbooks | Cheapest Textbooks | Compare Textbook Prices | Textbook Buyback | Textbook Price Bot | New and Used Music | That is a great site to find all books. Check it out. I bought all my college books for my sons and myself, plus orchid books. :goodluck:
Don't know why all that stuff came up about the campusi website as I only put in the exact website. :dunno:

wrebbitrocks- i believe i spoke to you on orchidforums. i live in the same town as you- i grow in my window also. i bought a rack from lowes. the light seems efficient. you should possibly try joining the local orchid society. its a bit on the geriatric side  but i like it. there are a lot of members who are very knowledgeable. plus a few huge green houses!

well he's my set up. not exactly 'right beside the window' but still a window sill grower since i dun use additional lights. my indoor garden: My Growing Space. The gap between the window and the rack is about 3'--enough for me to squeeze in and do the watering
