Determing need for rest
Greetings my fellow orchid friends,
When it comes to species it's no problem to figure out which needs a winter rest and which don't; I have books. I keep them misted on occasion so they don't dry out completely and get nice flowers from most in the spring. My question concerns hybrids. If it's a nobile type hybrid, yes it gets rested. How about others? How do you determine which ones need to be rested? My favorite genus are bulbos and dens. Mostly because there are some real odd balls in there. Thanks in advance for any help:biggrin: , Randy |
Randy,
I try to look at the parentage of each hybrid for clues about its resting needs. Hybrid vigor seems to imbue a lessened need for dormancy. Still though, when parents with strong dormancy needs are used in crosses their preferences do come though in their offspring. |
Hi Randy! Long time, no see :) I hope you are doing well :D
I also look at what the parents need and try to make a semi-educated guess. I most likely have one or two that are in the wrong conditions right now...time will tell ;) |
