The summer here is very hot. They survived this year because I managed to give them extra high humidity and constant air movement. But this is just a temporary decision. I will make a cool/cold orhidarium for the next summer. I am planning to use one of those cooling glass cases wгich they use in the shop when they need just to cool the food (it is not a fridge).
I will make changes ,of course... anyway... I am ьоиьса that I усвв keep the orchids too cool.
Which are the temperatures wich will keep them happy? Which is the minimal temperature wгich I must NOT go under? Usually the main problem with these orchids is keeping them too warm.I fear ,my problem will be quite the oposite
Thanks for the help :)

My experience (limited) is that all the cold growers will grow just fine during summer (as long as you observe the water issue for the Dracs - clean water only, ie. distilled or rainwater) they just won't bloom till the temps get colder. If you want blossoms on cold growing orchids, you need a way to reduce temps below, say 21C. If your temps during summer are below, say 27C, then you should be fine.

I would say that daytime temps should not be below 50F / 10C for cool or cold growers. Night temps can be to 40F / 4C for cold growers, 45F / 7C for cool growers.

Many times, warmer day temps can be tolerated by these plants if the night temp drops to optimal levels.

Good luck with you set up - and please let us know how things work out!

Thank you.So I must not get below 10C during the day and and 4-7C during the night. I wll keep you informed about my work over the cool orhidarium.

Hi,Masdevallias will stand tempertures down to 2-4 c. in winter without any harm at all,I grow mine in a cool shade house and never have any problems, the warmer tempertures in summer will require heaps of water plus misting at least once a day, if you don't let your media dry out you will have no problems, the plants need as all orchids do,good air circulation

I agree, everything I have read tells me that cold growing Masdies in the cloud forests withstand 2-3 hours of freezing a few times in the year. Therefore I would predict that in cultivation it is safe to expose them to 2-4 degrees C for a few hours at night, and 10 or so degrees warmer in the day time. I regularly expose my Masdies in the winter time to temperartures around 15 degrees C in the day and allow the temps to drop 5-10 degrees at night. Actually 15 degrees is my target temperature for most cold to cool growing plant species.

Now I am feeling more comfortable with the idea of the cool orchidarium. 15 C will be my target day temperature
