Stanhopea 'Ulli Paterny' (NOT)

Finally after 9 years this bloomed without the slugs getting the blooms. This was sold as Stan. 'Ulli Paterny', but it is not. The parentage of this plant is ( Stan. bucephalus 'Ruth Marie Christianen' AM/AOS X Stan. martiana 'Oaxac' CBR/AOS ). The problem is that this bucephalus is actually Stan. embreei. Bucephalus is an old name that was used for both Stan. jenischiana and oculata. I can find no record of it being used for Stan.embreei. The AOS has awarded other stanhopeas under the wrong name also.
What ever the name should be it's nice looking flower.
There is a picture of Stan."Ruth Marie Christianen" on Doug Pulleys web site

Beautiful! You can definitely see the Stanhopea martiana parent's influence. Congratulations on the wonderful flowering--and for having the patience to wait that long.

I guess after 9 years you cant get a refund can you? :scratchhead: lol Thats ok though because you have a real beauty on your hands! Congrats on the growing and hopefully you can keep those slugs away for good.

So what do you think you have? To me it looks much closer to Stanhopea Nirvana (posadae x martiana).

What i want to do is find an actual picture of Ulli Paterny.. there are very few pics on the web, and all of them just look like occulata. I can't see any martiana in them at all. Do you know what an Ulli Paterny should look like?

Undergrounder,
I can definitely see the martiana, though posadae tends to be a yellow flower and most of the flower in this post is white. You could always send an email to Ulrich Paterny for a pic. He might know. I accidentally found a German website with him on it. Funktionsträger der D.O.G.

You're right isurus it doesn't much resemble posadae in colour, i was going on pictures from this site which show Nirvana to be very similar. I wonder if the OP also used this site for reference, because it definitely does not look like the Uli Paterny on that site either (much more like a standard oculata).

I did find a picture of a (possibly mislabeled) Uli Paterny in an old issue of my local orchid magazine, and it looks much more like the above photo. So it might be a case of mistaken identity on that original site?

Hmmmm.... Interesting. I see what you mean about the resemblence to Nirvana and the fact that the martiana seems to get lost in the oculata hybrid. Also, the cross of bucephalus x martiana seems to have lost a lot of the martiana characteristics as well. I dunno! Its hard to conclusively say 'yay' or 'nay' based solely on one website's pics.
