Identify this blc. hybrid from Hausermann's?

Hello all--

Years ago (about 13-15) I bought this cattleya-laelia alliance orchid from Orchids by Hausermann here in the U.S. I lost the tag; then I forgot the name; then the orchid became one of my several favorites and I would dearly love to identify it.

Here's what I know about it:

• Bought from Hausermann's, circa 1993-1995
• I believe it is a brassia-laelia-cattleya hybrid (as opposed to lc, for example)
• The blooms are very large, like an old-fashioned traditional corsage orchid, 5-6 inches in diameter
• Unlike many orchids, it has a marked fragrance, sweet and very nice
• I believe it had the word "Dorothy" in its name; I'm not totally sure, but I think it did

It definitely has Cattleya dowiana in it's lineage with a lip like that!

Do you mean Brassovola and not Brassia (as Brassia is in the Oncidium Alliance)
Remember that Blc can now be classified as
Rhynchosophrocattleya or Rhyncholaeliocattleya as per the RHS registry ..
I did look these up and found under Rhyncholaeliocattleya -

Dorothy Marcus
Dorothy Parker
and under Rhynchosophrocattleya - I found 25 hits with Dorothy in their hybrid name ...

Thank you for that also. I have been so focused on carnivorous plants and other things that I haven't kept up with reclassifications or alternative classifications. ;)


Various "Dorothy Bertsch" orchid hybrids can be found on the 'net, but I am sure this is not a Dorothy Bertsch, even though the coloration might suggest it is one of that cross.

Also, having lived with the plant for so long and having seen its flower so many times in all its variations, I can tell, just from looking at the two other plants suggested as possibilities by other posters (Thank You other posters!)--

Blc. Lucille Lundberg

--that it is not either of these two, despite coloration similarities.

The current Hausermann's orchid that reminds me the most of it is their blc. Michael Gaine--

--but I'm fairly certain this orchid is not that one either, and Hausermann's doesn't list it as a fragrant orchid, which this one is.

Thank you very much Dorothy for the list of rhyncolaeliocattleya orchids that have "Dorothy" in their name. I'll check them all out if I can. I really hope to re-identify this orchid, and thank you everyone for your help! :biggrin:

I will have a couple divisions of this orchid for giveaway (for shipping, which may be as much as $25 since these are large mature divisions) here at OrchidBoard.com sometime this year or when weather permits shipping next year, depending on when I repot.

Just to add another possibility: How about Blc. (now Rhynchosophrocattleya) Alma Kee 'Tip Malee'? This has always ben one of my favorite large catt flowers, perhaps my only favorite large catt flower. I just love the venation in the lip.

My gosh! Blc. Alma Kee "Tip Malee" is so close I could call my orchid that and no one would know the difference! (At least, judging by all those photos from the Google search you suggested.)

The color and form seem to be exactly the same, although in some of the photos (it could just be the camera or light conditions) the petals and sepals look just slightly paler yellow than my unidentified orchid. In addition, I can't judge from the photos whether the blooms of Alma Kee 'Tip Malee' are the same size, generally, as my unidentified orchid.

However, if I did not already have this wonderful unknown orchid of mine, I would certainly want an Alma Kee 'Tip Malee' -- simply beautiful. I'm going to try to find the date of registration of Alma Kee 'Tip Malee' to see if there is any possibility that mine could be that orchid. The name doesn't sound familiar, and as I said, I seem to remember the word "Dorothy" in the name of my orchid, although I'm not sure. Some of the Blc. Gladys Oumae's also look similar, but not as close to my orchid as the Alma Kee 'Tip Malee'.
