Cochleantes Amazing in water culture
This division was in water culture for almost a year. When I noticed the bud it was developing under water as you can see in the second picture. I fished it out with a rubber band and gradually lifted it up. As Dorothy noted before the fragrance is delightful and the petals are sparkling white which is not apparent from this picture.

That's just way too cool!

Thank you for noticing Susanne. You can imagine what a delightful surprise this was. My grow area is in my house so my humidity is in the 30 s in the winter in the North East. I use water culture to transition my plants into SH when there is root rot and I have to treat until I get clean new roots.

You just have the bottom of the plant suspended in water? Which other ones do you do this with? If I have any that you've already had success with...I know what my next experiment is going to be :)

That's odd...I thought Cochleanthes always bloomed from between the leaf axils, like a Vanda! I'm surprised the bud didn't blast from being under water. Neat!

Amazing! Great save and a beautiful bloom!

I my favorite way to suspend the orchids in water is tying them to disposable plastic spoons and forks (deluxe make, of course) as you see with the Cochleantes. For the Sharry Baby next to it I used a large salad fork and had to tie the heavy odontocidium bulb to an inverted net pot and Christmas light stake. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...humbs/onc6.jpg http://www.orchidboard.com/community...b_in_water.jpg I have more examples of water culture in my Passive Hydro album. I also talked about my experience on the second page of this thread http://www.orchidboard.com/community...r-culture.html I hope this link works. |
That is "Amazing" and interesting. Marilyn

This is very odd, all the text I read says plants will instantly die if left sitting in water yet here are all these examples that are simply stunning. I like the flower has a nice big poofy lip, like someone punched it purple.

This fascinates me how you are growing this as I do have a potted Cochleanthes Amazing and it is putting out new growths for me at this time .. I love it's flower
 Congrats on a very successful and unusual way of growing this 'amazing' and pleasantly fragrant orchid :) |
