Vanilla cutting new growth, HELP
 

Hi everyone,

Well, my vanilla cutting I purchased last December has two nice very long roots, and now a new 'something' has sprouted, and I don't know what to do with it. I was assuming I would get a new leaf, but this looks like a new vine with a little root starting? HELP would be appreciated as to what it is exactly, and what should I do next. Soon I won't be able to keep the lid on my seedling box...thanks! :scratchhead: :scratchhead:

A question for you: my original cutting is approx. 18 inches long, with two very long roots...when it comes time to pot it up, what do I do with this long cutting? I'm confused whether this is a leaf, because it looks more like a vine with a new root starting on the left side....Soon it will outgrow my seedling pot with the lid, and I need to know how to proceed...someone mentioned that I should cut the old cutting in half, but the two roots are coming from two nodes close to each other and the new growth is on the upper side of them.
Please help to clarify what I should do next. How do I actually pot it? bury the entire old cutting? and allow the new vine to grow upwards? or cut it at the lowest root growth and prop it up with the vine growing sideways? as you can see, I'm very confused.

Mine was about the same size when I got it.
All I did was fill a 3 gallon nursery pot with the AV Mix, secured a pole in it with the tree fern attached and stuck the end of the cutting down in the center a few inches and tied it to the pole.

Roots will continue to sprout out along the entire vine along with new leaves :)

I heavily mist it every day and feed it once a week. When I feed it, besides spraying the entire plant to get all the roots, I also pour some right down through the top of the tree fern totem.

Don't know if I'm really accomplishing anything by doing that but the plant seems to like it :)

I think I understand what you mean. Prop the 18" upwards in the pot burying the new roots and let the new leaf/vine do what it likes on the tree fern....

Here is my Vanilla. I got it last year as small cutting with only two leaves. It took some time to acclimatise but this summer it grew very fast. Since the winter is coming I had to take It inside. I placed it in bathroom under fluorescent tube. I'm not sure how will it react on artrificial light, I don't know whether Vanilla can be grown under this type of tube? This is the most humid place in my house and this plant likes humidity...

Where do you live? I'm in a cold winter zone in Ontario Canada. Just wondering seeing you said you brought it in for the winter.

I'm in Montenegro (south Europe)

Mediteranean, subtropical climate. Winters are not so cold (rarely falls below 0 Celsius) but yet, that's too cold for Vanilla... it will have to grow inside until April...

You may be able to buy broad spectrum fluorescent lights to replace those in your bath. You shouldn't even notice the slight difference in the light it produces. That should keep your plant happy this winter. Broad spectrum fluorescent lights are available at Home Depots, Lowes and Walmarts.
