Dragonfruit Flower

This is a very common cactus that you can find all over the drier regions of Hawaii, including the rock wall behind my house where I grow most of my orchid collection. Hylocereus undatus is the scientific name of the cactus (Google it for more info, its pretty interesting!) and the flowers open only for one night and are HUGE!! The second pic includes my hand touching the petals for size reference. I also swished my fingers inside the flower, hoping to fertilize it so I can get some of the yummy dragon fruit (or so I hear!) soon! Very cool!

Very nice. Any idea what the pollinator is? Must be something that flies at night - a bat?

In this case....me! Normally though, its bats and moths (or so says How to Grow Dragon Fruit | Dragon Fruit | Pitaya ), though bees will pollinate the flower in the early morning as it closes up shop.

Very pretty, big blossom too!
Bats eh?
I've never heard of this fruit before. If you get lucky and get some of this fruit, I hope you post a photo (I'm curious) Ooh and don't forget to tell us how the taste is :)

Absolutely! I might actually get one down at Safeway and try it from there if I get impatient!

I got to have some while in Thailand. Frankly found it a bit bland for my tastes (especially when surrounded by the other yummy and varied fruits). Very firm and crunchy (due to seeds) texture.

Does it require another plant to create fruit, or can it form fruit with just one plant?
