Dend Speciosum unknown var
2 Attachment(s)
Hi folks.
Well, I was told the huge plant I had was a dend. kingianum (or Thelychiton kingianum of course) but one look at the open flowers screamed "speciosum" of some description. Having found the photo in the following link I suspected it was var. capricornicum as the pictured flowers look identical to mine: Dendrobium speciosum capricornum on Flickr - Photo Sharing! However, further reading indicates that capricornicum is small, with 7-15 cm stems: http://members.optusnet.com.au/elanb...mesha_1982.pdf The stem with the flowerspike shown is a little over 50 cm...it's a very large plant. There are about 60 + flowers on the spike, it's a huge plant that came from a tree in my gran's yard in Gladstone. She's probably had it over 30 years. I suspect it's not a hybrid - probably collected by someone. The "capricornicum" var is found around the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland, Australia which is probably about 80 - 100 km North of Gladstone. But it seems to be too big... So maybe...grandiflorum? Or not? I'm lost here. If I didn't have this size issue, I'd happily call it capricornicum. Any suggestions? Cheers, Aus. |
