Tropical orchids for ID help
 

Hello all,

I'm from Sabah, Malaysia and have several species of orchids that needs to be identified:-

I have several "slippers" species which haven't produce any flower (after 4 years of waiting!). Can any of you help me getting this rare species a bloom?.

Its seems to be in good health, with a new young "baby" with healthy green leaves.

Appreciate all your help.

The yellow is a phalaenopsis or doritaenopsis hybrid.

The second and third photos are of phalaenopsis-type dendrobium hybrids. Phalaenopsis-type dendrobiums bear several flowers on a long stem.

Do you have photos of the slipper orchids? Seeing the foliage might give an indication of the group to which it belongs. Paphs may have a single flower, or are multifloral, sequential blooms, etc.

The first one is a Phalaenopsis hybrid
and the 2 and 3 are Dendrobiums :)

It might need some calcium treatment.

The medium i used is dead wood (small pieces), charcoal, coconut husk, broken pieces of bricks, dried leaves (naturally added as all my orchids are placed outside) and crushed egg shells (as suggested in other website).

Liquid fertilizer (from Thailand, 3ml per 1 litre of water) is also in use (spraying). Seems to work, as the older slipper orchids start to produce new leaves.

My paph might be "sumazau" species, as it is one of the rarest species in Borneo.

There is probably nothing wrong with the medium you are using considering one cannot get proper bark etc in this part of the world. The only things that would worry me is
1) the size of the pot - may be too big for the size of the plant
2)the depth at which it is potted. I know that people in Thailand ( even in BKK ) can grow & flower P.rothschildianum - if that is what your plant is. However they use a slightly smaller pot & the majority of ingredients in their mix is charcoal, broken brick & some coconut ( for moisture retention ) & they would water everyday.BTW the second photo ( mauve Den.) is either a hybrid with D.bigibbum or is D.bigibbum var superbum which is the floral emblem of Qld Australia
