should I move my precious outside?
 

Hello All :waving

I just put two of my three orchids outside for the summer, a Catt and an oncidium. I have one more a barkaria skinneri x baradendrum terusan (my precious!) that I have decided to keep indoors. It's growing really quickly and has several shoots coming up and a keiki thats in bloom. I'm scared I'll interrupt the plant too much if I move it outside.
I know it doesn't get very much humidity, so I guess my question is, if it has been growing well so far with relatively low humidity will it continue to do well? I live close to the ocean in northern California so the outside air has good humidity. Should I move it outside? B.T.W. my deck is southern facing with a roof over it so they never get direct light but theres bright indirect light.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.:bowing

I'm a firm believer in letting it remain where it is doing well. As nicely as it sounds that is doing, what do you hope to gain by moving it?

BTW, that hybrid should be stated (note capitalization and spelling) as Barkeria skinneri x Bardendrum Terusan

If it's doing well inside it's current environment I wouldn't move it outside. Moving outside could induce stress because it would have to adapt to new environmental stressors (i.e. higher relative humidity) being that you live by the ocean.

Why would higher RH be stressful? I would think just the opposite. (I agree that breezes, temperatures, and light level changes can stress the plant, though.)

Late last winter I added a large fogger to my greenhouse to substantially increase the humidity, and all of my plants responded by putting out lots of new roots and growths.

I agree keep it in it's same environment, must be happy it's showing the signs:biggrin: Moving outdoors to a totally different environment would stress your now blooming orchid.

Yes I do agree that breezes, temperatures and light levels are good changes for orchids but not the recipe for one in bloom that has found it's happy place, at least that's my thoughts.

thanks for the input, I'll keep her right where she is. Besides I can enjoy the flowers better if their inside where I can see them. I'm hoping the outdoors will do good for the other two! They don't seem to be thriving indoors and have already flowered this season.
