new kid on the block here...just wanna say hi
Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie (just joined yesterday)....so I wanted to tell you hello and I'm glad to be here with you. As I assume you can see from my profile info (??) My name is Vicki, I'm of the female persuasion (lol) , I live in Alabama and I am the ripe ole age of 58 yrs. old I am VERY new to the orchid-world.....I only started trying my hand at growing them about a month ago. The plant-buying addiction has apparently hit me, too....cuz I have 17 various orchids that I bought from Lowes and Walmart within the last few wks. and I actually have no clues as to if I can even grow just 1 correctly. lol (I've already drowned 2 by mistake....from overwatering (bless their hearts) and I am wondering if I have underwatered about 4 that I have mounted and hung outside on the back porch for the summer. (??) Needless to say, I really need your growing-info help and will appreciate all suggestions and advice very much. Thanks in advance. Vicki |
Hello Vicki and welcome.
I think everyone here has drowned or starved one or 2 or a lot of them so hang in there, you are not alone. Im pretty new myself but you will get a lot of help here. You willl need to however give a discription at least of what you have. Pics are great, so are names if you got any tags? if not hmmmmm how well can you draw? Or discribe it, we probably have some sketch artists at hand Good luck PS 17????????? |
Hi Vicki and welcome to the OB. Different types of orchid require different growing. Like Swamper said picture would make it easier to help. What type of orchids do you have? But as a general growing goes allow the orchid to dry out between watering and don't water late in the day or night. Phals and Vanda's don't like water laying on the leaves overnite. What is your watering schedule? What type of light do they get?

hi vicky and welcome.
this is the best site to learn about orchids; so go ahead and ask the questions you need to know. pics would be great so we know what we,re talking about. have a great time on o/b. |
:waving Viciki and welcome to the OB. You'll have a lot of fun here as well as learn so very much.
Pictures and names are almost a given here in order to help. I realize that since your plants came from Lowes, etc. there may not be names so pictues will be very helpful. If you need help in posting pics, let us know. You will find help page links on the home page of OB, but sometimes a little personal help will go a long way. You've certainly contraced the orchid bug and you've found the right place to find folks only to willing to help you make "it" grow! Al |
Hi Swamper!
Thank you for the welcome...I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and learning more about orchids...and goodness knows I have a LOT to learn...even about the forum. I've never been part of one before and not familiar with how one works. It took me forever just to find where I clicked to reply to you. lol In fact, I'm not even sure I'm doing it right. I'll take pics all along of my plants cuz I have tons of questions and I know how helpful pics are. As for name tags, I may have a couple...not sure. I decided there was no purpose in me keeping them at this point cuz my only concern now is keeping the plant alive. lol If they will be helpful to you though, I'll keep them from now on...that is, if I buy more plants...and the chances of that are gr8. lol Thanks again for the welcome, Swamper |
Yes actually the tags are their ID cards. This could be a fun game later on ..... Trying to put the tags back to the corresponding orchid. I think they become a noid when they loose their tag. No less beatiful but you know.. I lost my birth cirtificate in shipment as a kid too and I turned out ok:rofl: Anyway have fun here, you're in the coolest and warmest forum in town.

Hi Vicki
Welcome to the OB......it is the best place to get help for any orchid questions. It is also amazing reading which I like to do.....lol. I too have just had my last orchid "drowned" by someone who will remain nameless. I cannot take it out of the pot to dry it out because of how it is set in the pot. I am afraid of breaking the roots. It has been over a week now and it seems to be perking back up. I only have two orchids at this time not by choice. I am going to build them up slowly and enjoy them for a long time. Welcome and enjoy the daily posts. |
:welcome: Vicki and enjoy your orchid info quest. :goodluck:

Welcome to the OB Vicky! Is nice to know you jumped on the Orchid Growing Wagon :D
As we've said before, it'd be great to see some pics of your 'chids to provide more accurate advise, and yes we've all killed an orchid or 2, or 3 lol in the process of learning how to grow them correctly. Ask away! Priz |
