"To mist or not to mist"
right now doing mostly Phals and different oncidiums on a south window sill Just installed one 4 foot light and may invest in one more as this is in the living room where I fore see keeping some plants all the time even after green house construction is completed ( as an aside I bought the house 3 years ago thinking taht just off the patio would be a great green house location !! The orchid virus was in it's dormant stage but still lurking in the back of my tiny brain !!) Have been switching lots of plants to s/h and now understand how to water (duh!--took a bit of learning ) So, does misting help or just make me a worry wart?? JD:scratchhead:

I live in a pretty dry (for the most part) environment and never mist any plants. House humidity in low 40% range winter and 60s in summer. BTW, Oncidium group plants don't like misting the leaves. Tends to lead to black spots on the leaves. Good luck on the greenhouse. Please post photos when done with it.

misting or not
You bring up a very good point-- think I will just top off the water levels in the trays ( corse gravel in trays almost half inch deep) maybe a little more often and just let things settle in and see what's what--
I have plans to build a passive heat sink in the floor of the greenhouse ---been wanting to do this for years --pics as work progresses JD |
My opinion is that unless you mist every 5-10 minutes 24 hours a day misting does nothing for humidity. You are better off getting a humidifier if you need to raise humidity. I only need to use mine in winter because of the heat from the furnace.

Ray, I read the articles and I now informed and up to speed Thanks--- I think I am just about out of indoor space and am nearing that critical "mass" of plants to start the construction project -- going green! as in house! Bonsai! er.......you get the drift. JD
