Online search tips?

This is a very simple question and frankly I feel quite dumb even asking it. I thought about just sending a pm to Dorothy :) but then thought that others may benefit from this question being asked as well. I seem to never have any luck looking up anything online. Is there any tips on finding a hybrids parentage? A certain website? Or do you just go to google, type in the hybrids name and see what it brings up? See, I told you it was a stupid question! But I'm always amazed at how some people can find certain info and hours later I am still searching. :scratchhead: :blushing: TIA!

It's not a stupid question, Sarah. I am the same way. Some people understand exactly how to get the max out of a computer and others, like me, struggle with it. I think the younger generation are brought up with computers and find using it second nature.
As far as Dorothy knowing exactly where to look for something and finding it in "warp speed" timing, I don't know, perhaps she has a 6th sense or something. :bowing
Do you suppose she will give away any of her secrets?
Oh Dorothy!!!!!!! :blushing:

Thank you Kiki for letting me know I'm not alone! I'm hoping that Dorothy will give us some inside info too! I know she says that she does a lot of reading to find stuff but I have tried that route too and still can't find what I'm looking for. Maybe I don't use the correct words or phrases? :scratchhead: ;)

Sarah - it's a very good question to ask.
I use to look up parentage by Googling then I found with the help of others here the Royal Horticulture Society's Searches (RHS) - that is the source I use for hybrid lineage -
Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: Registration of Orchids

If you have the hybrid name or grex - enter it into the blank on this page - Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: The International Orchid Register

If you have the parent's and wish to find if their offspring have a registered name - enter them here - Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: The International Orchid Register

Hint - when entering the hybrid name ( grex ) for that search - I have found that sometimes it doesn't go through and you end up with no results - Best thing is to put in one or two words of the hybrid and leave out the genus and you will get a list of any name containing that word. This helps with genus that have changed - for example - For Lc. Blue Boy - One can enter Blue Boy and will come up with Guarisophleya Blue Boy.
Once you get the parent names of that hybrid .. continue to look up the hybrids until you come to species. The species are the end of the branch of the lineage.
I hope this helps you :)

Thank you Dorothy!!!! :bowing I knew there was something I was missing! I'm sure that link will save me hours of frustration. ;) You are the best! :D

:blushing: You are very welcome, Sarah :D
Sometimes following lineages back 12 generations, as I did with one hybrid,
can take quite long but it's much more convenient than Googling.
If you need any more help with searching hybrid lineages, just let me know .. :)

Oh Dave - all you need is a small bank loan for $245 ;)
