Ideal Rooting Medium for Oncidiums
 

Hello all,

I am getting ready to repot a "dancing lady" type mini-oncidium for the first time. What do you recommend to use as a rooting medium. The humidity situation is that I grow them in my apartment. I seem to be able to keep the RH at around 50% or higher with pebble trays and use of a small humidifier. Also, is there any old growth or roots that I should cut-off? I am totally new at this, so please be gentle.

I use Long fibered Sphag moss and let it dry or get nearly dry between waterings.

I also find sphag moss works very well for oncidiums and all of the intergenerics that I have. With some I've also mixed in some coarse perlite to open it up a bit. I water as soon as the top of the moss starts to feel crunchy.

I agree. . .I am working on rooting a very tiny little bulb-ette of an Oncidium Twinkle.

I am using long-strand sphagnum moss opened up with small to medium chunks of charcoal.

At the bottom of my translucent plastic pot, I've got bigger chunks of charcoal only, for super good drainage.

So far. . .so good!
