Paphiopedilum ?
1 Attachment(s)
:waving, Good afternoon, members. I purchased a Paphiopedilum a few months ago. It is labeled 'Paphiopedilum Lippewunder,' and the flower has bloomed. It is stunning, even gorgeous, but I don't think it is labeled correctly. Elegant Orchid in Delray Beach, Florida, where I purchased it, had other Paphiopedilum Lippewunders in bloom. My plant does not look like the other Paphiopedilum at all. I'm sending an attachment, with hopes that one of you can identify this Paphiopedilum orchid for me. It has two flower spikes; the second should flower within the week. Waiting for a member to identify this orchid for me. I'll bet that WaterWitchin knows the name of this Paphiopedilum; she has helped me many times through the years: bowing Zelvan

Seedlings from the same pod often look very different from each other. This is especially true for complex Paphiopedilum hybrids with many ancestors. I think your label is correct.
|
I suspect it is mislabeled. Every photo I’ve ever seen of Paph. Lippewunder (one word, by the way) has prominent brown coloration in the central axis of the dorsal sepal and upper halves of the petals.

Ray, thank you for the spelling correction. I also thought that the brown coloration was missing. I also feel that this flower has more of a greenish tinge to it. I've had other Paphiopedilums with this greenish coloring before; I can't remember how they were labeled, though (too many years ago). Thank you again.

Papahiopedilum ?
:hello again. I have been looking online for a Paphiopedilum that looks like the one I posted as a mislabeled Lippewunder. I think I have found a hybrid family similar to mine, a hybrid in the green complex bulldog family. That's the closest I have been able to find to my flower, whatever family it is in, I think it is beautiful. I hope the flowers stay in bloom a long time and bloom as many times this year as possible. If a member has a different opinion as to which Paphiopedilum family this flower belongs to, please let me know.:bowing. Zelvan

There are so many, similar plants, you'll never know for sure.
Can you go back to the vendor with the plant or photo and ask? They might have a better idea. |
I agree with Ray, it is likely mis-labelled. Lippewunder has very prominent brown markings on both dorsal & petals.
On the other hand, the first Lippewunders came to the US in the Miami WOC. That's about 16 years ago. Since then more have been produced, in many cases by selfings or sib crosses, thus creating F2 and probably F3 populations. In such re-shuffling of the genes, it is not entirely impossible that a nontypical coloration could occur. |
Hey Zelvan, like Ray says I'd contact original vendor if you're really curious. Regardless, it's a nice one!

Papahiopedilum ?
:bowing I want to thank all of you for your comments about this Paphiopedilum. I honestly don't think Elegant Orchid knows the real name of this orchid either. I don't have to know, as Ray & WaterWitchin said... 'there are too many Paphiopedilum hybrid combinations to ever know for sure'. It's still beautiful...as WaterWitchin said... 'it's a nice one'. :waving. Zelvan
