Good afternoon. My name is Zelvan, formerly known as Zoren. I have been trying to fix my old account for a while now. I finally gave up and started a new account. I can't remember when I joined the Orchid Board, but it was many years ago. It's great to be back. I live in South Florida; I'm 83 years old, a disabled military veteran, and although I've been keeping orchids for a long time I'm still learning and having problems. This past summer's heat has been brutal, and it seems to have affected my orchids poorly. I have several Psychopsis that before the heat of this past summer were blooming quite regularly, about every 4 to 8 weeks. They haven't bloomed since May or June of 2024. They have buds (some plants still have buds) but they don't bloom, and all of the spikes are green. I was thinking about repotting the plants to see if they might bloom. I'm asking members if they have been having problems with their orchids because of the heat this past summer. And if anyone can give me some idea of why my Psychopsis orchids aren't blooming. My other orchids have slowed down also but, my Phalaenopses are in bud looking forward to some beautiful flowers. Well, that's all for now, waiting for a one (or several) members to share their experiences and some advice to help me with my Pyschopsis problem :bowing:waving, Zelvan Formally Zoren.

Welcome back, Zoren/Zelvan. And thank you for your military service. I wish I could help you with your Psychopsis questions, but unfortunately I live in Michigan and do not grow that particular orchid. I'm sure others will be along shortly who are experienced with it and live in similar climates as yours.

Welcome back Z-
You wouldn’t happen to be a fellow V-N- vet? Korea? Sorry, only curious,as I am a combat vet myself. |
Welcome back!

Water Dog111, Thank you for your service. Are you a V-N vet? I'm not, I served from 1960 to 1963 and trained as a 'covert operator' in the Southeast Asian theater in 1962. I imagine you understand my duties; I'm 100% service connected. I would be open to a phone call; I'm always interested in other combat veterans' stories and sharing my story. I don't know how to send phone numbers privately, if you know tell me and I'll send you my cell number, or send me your number. Looking forward to your reply, Zelvan.

Hi Zoren... I remember you well. :waving I looked at your old profile, and it had switched off. Don't know why. A lot of glitches in this old software. I reactivated it for you and sent you a PM with the new password.
The temperature range of most psychopsis is average 80F (27C), and nights average 62-64F (17-18C), with a diurnal range of 16-18F. Where are you growing it...inside or outside? You may need to move it inside if it's getting up to the 90's regularly. I grew a couple outside here, and they stopped blooming at around 90F and were really suffering when it got to 100+. Then of course had slowed down blooming in fall when I had to bring them inside. I didn't move them outside one year and kept to a south window in my AC'd sunroom, and they bloomed like crazy. The only downside to that is you have to keep really good humidity for them, but the temp is worth more than the less humidity inside blooming-wise, in my opinion. |
