Cattleya keiki
Hi All
I have a Cattleya that has sprouted a keiki, which I know is unusual. It has 4 healthy roots and a stem that is approx 3 inches long that looks flat. The mother plant is not very healthy and has had some root rot which I am trying to nurse it out of Any advice would be greatly appreciated |

I cant see the rest of the plant but that growth looks like its coming from the base of the plant, no? If so that is a completely normal growth.

That is not a keiki, it is the normal growth pattern of sympodial orchids like catts.
Each growth is connected to the “mother” via a rhizome . If left connected, the plants form a colony that shares the creation and storage of phytochemical reserves, making it more resilient and capable of growing a blooming better. So called “specimen plants” that frequently get awards tend to be large, robust colonies. Separating the growths has the opposite effect. |
