Got a surprise single bloom from my Miltoniopsis 'Morris Chestnut'
 

I got this as a rather small seedling 18 months ago from Flask&Flora and I wasn't expecting it to do anything yet. Much to my surprise, it sent up a spike with a single flower on it this winter, which just bloomed over the weekend. It took five or six days to fully open, which I'm not accustomed to. I'm pleased and very excited to see it in future years as a mature plant.

I'm open to advice on when to repot, because it's in a 4" terra cotta pot right now and it's going to become very crowded by winter. But maybe I should let it? It has 8-10 new pseudobulbs starting, so hopefully I'm not too late if it does need a repot.

I would let it get very crowded in that pot, then repot after the very crowded flowering.

That's what I've decided to do. I might have to break the terra cotta pot when it's time to repot next spring, but it only cost $2.00 from Lowes plus some time to drill holes in it, so I'm not bothered.

Drill holes? Terra cotta breathes enough. You don't need to drill extras holes in the side.

Since I'm a biologist and summer is my busiest season, I often don't have time to hand water. So I have it on a daily irrigation drip. In the winter it lives in a very humid IKEA cabinet (~90%). In these conditions I figured it would be better to over-ventilate than overwater.

These don't like to dry out ever. Not soggy,but wants to be damp.

And when happy they grow fast and lustily.
