Where are the tipo Cattleya mossiae?
 

I've been looking for a classic tipo C mossiae.
I've tried Chadwick, SVO, and a few South American growers but I can't find one.
At this point I'm open to a flask, a seedling, or a division.
Any leads would be appreciated.

It's funny how the most historically common orchids are rare now. And how rare varieties like coerulea and alba are the only things available sometimes. Ironic!

I would keep my eyes peeled at orchidweb. They don't have any currently but they have listing for several nice ones including polyploids.

When they come to shows, they ship within the US. Ron Kaufmann in California helps them get the plants sent out.

Yeah, I wanted a tipo L. purpurata. I got one (I think from a society auction, but was donated by SVO) labeled L. purpurata 'Tipo' x self. Turns out 'Tipo' was the cultivar name of an awarded plant. And it turned out to be a lovely alba. I asked Fred Clarke about that and he said that about 1/4 of them from the selfing came out alba... clearly line bred, with an alba in there somewhere, and statistically some of them were. Maybe 'Tipo' x self but not "tipo".

When I first began to collect orchids, Phalaenopsis equestris, aphrodite, amabilis and schilleriana were widely available along with many other orchids that I never see any more. So many orchids that were commonly available for years are impossible to find. I did finally find a Phal schilleriana but why are they so difficult to find.

Ouch! I'm guessing you had to raise it from a seedling for a few years before you found that out.


Didn't see any mossiae on the current availability at AWZ

Well, it wasn't that small.. SVO did the serious growing, by the time they are sold they aren't that far from blooming (I think a couple of years). And it is a very pretty flower, just not tipo.

Hausermann had small seedlings last time I looked. I can't get to their Web site right now. It goes down for maintenance every now and then.
