Sophronitis coccinea - Is it a bloom comming?
This is my first and only (so far) Sophronitis.
I noticed that the structure is different from the previous leaves that grew already under my care. So, what do you think? Another question is related with the moss growing in the medium (it is potted). I'm somewhat concrend that this might lead to some kind of rot. Should I trim it (it's firmly attached to the medium, it I try to pull it out I might damage something)? Here's the photos: https://i.postimg.cc/nCLyvr4n/20231227-163003.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/QVjGd0V9/20231227-162911.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/9z13RZqx/20231227-162922.jpg |
Any new growth could reward you with buds. So maybe... Especially if it becomes a bit fatter.
A far as the moss goes, maybe a trim... these do like to dry out somewhat. |
Done!
I decided to pull the moss really gently as I was suspecting that there were some new growths and/or roots under the moss mass. I took the most part to avoid any damage to the plant and to retain some water. The pull instead of trimming was a good decision.. some roots were growing healthily through the moss (photo attached). https://i.postimg.cc/nsJmhBPY/20231229-122726.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Th4WWZsP/20231229-122737.jpg |
Noticed this today...probably a future aborted bloom in a recently opened leaf. Honestly, I'm not expecting anything from it as, if I'm well informed, at this point if should be a well formed bloom about to open.

Don't give up yet! I think it looks a lot like a bud.
My S. coccinea new growths are still tightly closed, but I have S. wittigiana with a bud that is yet to open, fully formed (in a few days), the leaf has been open for several weeks. |
I had the idea that when the leaves open the unopened blooms are already formed, much largercthan mine and almost ready to open.
|
Not necessarily... That really looks like a bud in the early stages. I don't recall what mine did when it bloomed last year. (I usually don't notice until there is a bud big enough to say "Hey, I'm here...") This year mine is just sloooowwww.

Update on this one: it's a bloom.
It is taking ages in its development. What I can notice is the increase in length of the spike and a change of color into red. Apart from that, a new growth and a yellowing leaf (don't know if it's an old one or if this is a reaction to poor culture). So, let's wait!:) https://i.postimg.cc/HjqfLNny/20240203-140651.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Ty3sSM7Z/20240203-140705.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/0rMTPvkv/20240203-140721.jpg |
Mine is slow too, I think more than a month later than prior years. But the leaf of the largest growth is just opening and I can see a little bud!

Well, it bloomed...
I'm very pleased as I never thought it could make it. My conditions, especially in hot weather, are really far from what it needs. The flower seems to be a little bit deformed but, hopefully, the new growth will bloom also. Here's some bad quality photos...the background is not the best but what matters is the plant, isn't it? https://i.postimg.cc/62Qwq95z/20240208-111002.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/RqN4zVYZ/20240208-111111.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/kBSCBYqr/20240208-124403.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/8s9Dkg8B/20240208-130250.jpg |
