Sophronitis fungal infection
2 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone!
We've been having 3 weeks of almost non stop rain now with 95-100% humidity and 10°C maximum temps. Some fungus seems to have found the perfect conditions to thrive. I'm guessing Phytophthora, but I'd like some second view and how to treat. So far it's badly affected a Sophronitis coccinea that was growing marvellously well and had more than doubled in just a year. I've had to remove at least 5 leaves plus a couple bulbs and treated with cinnamon. I applied copper fungicide dissolved in water, but then it got even worse. Any advice and experiences are welcome. :D |
Does the problem start with the base or the leaf tip? Phytophthora normally enters through the roots, not leaf tips. It is a disease of hot temperatures. Perhaps contact a local university with an agriculture or microbiology department.

Thank you ES! In this case it started from the tip, but in others it has started in the middle and quickly progressed.

I don't think it's phytophthora. Most orchidists don't need to deal with cool temperature fungi so it might be harder to track down. Our moderator Camille has studied agricultural fungi in the Netherlands. Maybe she will see this.

I can't see the photos clearly. They're too dark.

Try with more light on your screen. I threw away the leaf after taking the photo. If it develops on some other, I'll try to upload some new pics. ;)

Some more pics, as it progresses.
