Repotting Vanda 'Cherry Blossom'
 

I won a potted vanda at our club several months back. The pot was deteriorating, I knew it would need to be repotted.

Now, I've never had a potted vanda, all mine have always "hung out in the altogether", as it were.
I found most of the roots black, in fact only a few inside the pot appear to be alive.
The air roots appear to be fine. So should I trim the dead roots and repot, or acclimate it to it live in the air?

If you have a bunch of vandas doing well hanging out, and your plant only had air roots living, I say hang it with the others. I doubt it will need to acclimatize much, it will.just need to grow new roots

Vandas really WANT to live with roots in the air. Your challenge is to give them adequate moisture that way. Daily watering.

Cherry Blossom is a cross between falcata and ampullacea. It’s a relatively miniature vanda.Being half falcata, Japanese/Korean growers would pot it in a traditional moss mound. There’s a right way of watering as moss is too water retentive.

Personally, I’d cut off the dead roots and pot it in large chunks of bark. Try to increase humidity and pay attention until roots grow.

You can also grow them bareroot but in a high humidity environment and almost daily watering

I grow one. It was in a 4" wooded basket, and I just slipped that into a 6" basket.

You can try hanging it with the others, I'd guess it would do well if that's already something that works for your Vandas.

I have one of these, and if you do want to keep it potted what has worked really well for me (in my conditions) is to pot it in a netpot with large-ish bark, and then set the netpot in a slightly larger transparent plastic pot. The roots then grow out into the void between the pots. I learned this method from an Italian nursery, and it allows the plants to dry out more quickly than in a normal pot, is less messy than a basket indoors, and the outer pot helps keep humidity around the roots.

I went ahead and put it in a 6" wood basket with very little moss.
Now it lines up behind the 5 others for a dip in the pool each day. I keep a 30 gallon tub for the dunking, and now that the weather is starting to cool, I am thinking I will need to add an aquarium heater in the near future so no one goes into shock in a cold bath.
