Dendrobium Love Memory ‘Fizz’ Monster Cane

Earlier this year, I saw a bunch of these at the Chicago botanical garden orchid show and was absolutely smitten with the blooms and how floriferous it can get. As an indoor grower, space comes at a premium and their smaller size meant I could easily accommodate them. Many sources said this plant typically grows canes 12-16 inches in height. Perfect for me. I ordered myself one finally recently and received this monster! 20 inches tall holy crap! 😅 I’m curious to see if the next canes reach this monster size. Anyone else run into something similar with other surprisingly large individuals?

A description I found says canes up to 26 inches...so seems par for the course.
Descriptions also talk about how 'robust' it is...that can often be read as how large and burly :)

that's a chunker!!

the nice thing about this forum is trades!! if it is too big for you maybe someone else wants it.

me, i'm a big orchid guy. i would try to set it up pendant and then hang it so it doesnt have too big of a footprint.

take all of this with a grain of salt bc i kill every noble that i dont mount bareroot to a tree.

jiblylegs, the vendor that sold you that Dendrobium did a great job growing it. New growth on a sympodial orchid should be as tall or taller than the previous growth if it is happy. Even if it throws multiple leads you want two foot tall canes! Look at the bright side, that orchid will produce flowers from nodes all down that cane. Taller cane with more nodes equals more flowers. Nobile Dens are easy to grow outdoors Summer and Fall until temps hit the low 40’s and then can go in a sunny window until flowering! Since Jairo Yamamoto passed I have been wanting to reacquire some of the Yamamoto hybrids. Happy Growing!

Enjoy it!
If it does not fit in your window, LED grow lights keep getting cheaper.

Welcome to the Orchid Board. We'd love to learn more about what you grow and what your growing setup is like. Consider introducing yourself in the Introductions-Break the Ice forum.
