Suggestions for March Bloomers
 

not pants....plants!!

I need some blooming plants to take to orchid show in march next year. Since I am in a re building phase, my plants that I have are early january or june. Got some epidendrums all blooming out some paphs now and a few smallish phals. The cuthbertsonii might not hold out as I need to pluck the flowers for winter rest. Just nothing looking good for march.

Its hard to time when a plant when or can bloom but there has to be some late February mid march blooming specific plants. My knowledge is limited so I will have to pick your brains.

So if you have one that puts ona flower show in March I have a need to know. I need flowers for the show.

My favorite March bloomer is Epidendrum ciliare. Interesting flower and super night fragrance.

oh I like that. I have the nocturnum that might be on the list of maybes growing some buds.

I became an accidental epidendrum fan :).

If you can generate the necessary conditions, some of the temperate Aussie Dendrobiums. That's when Den speciosum, Den kingianum, relatives and hybrids thereof do their thing, at least where I live. The February-March shows have so many that it's hard to appreciate the individuals. Consider Den. x delicatum (Specio-kingianum) . SVO has bunches of Aussie Den hybrids. The whole group is pretty bullet-proof. Fred Clarke should be able to advise.

That's also peak time for Cymbidiums, but not necessarily for the "warmth-tolerant" ones which tend to be more fall bloomers.

I like those Aussie dendrobiums he has for a long time now. About picked off one of everything else he has. Just may be time to pick on his Dendrobes too. :)

A Chysis limminghei has my attention for a prospect. Found a blooming size one and its due :)

Also, if you want Den. speciosum, consider Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. Andy's Orchids also has them in profusion.

when I used to visit the OLD Miami orchid show on first weekend of March there were always a bunch of cattleya skinneri's blooming. not too hard to find but they are now pricy. Look for awarded clones as there are many FCC's around. They will grow into specimen size in just a few years and very easy to care for.
eventually you can decorate the pool deck, all purple plants on right side of pics are skinneri in baskets.

I had forgotten. The skinneri I had was a growing monster. just allergic to the cold.
