Rooting in the Grow Room
 

The basement orchid grow room is a perfect place to root cuttings...

Went 8 for 8 on these fig cuttings:

There's a guy near me that works with both plants.

His propagation method is as follows:

1. Soak fresh cuttings in 1 oz/gal Kelpak solution for 30 minutes.
2. Wrap all but bottom inch with Parafilm tape (retains moisture in cutting - he does not do this in the humidity of a greenhouse)
3. Dips exposed end in Clonex gel
4. Pot up and wait.

He has stated that since adding that first step, his cuttings root and grow much more quickly, and has never had a failure.

My next door neighbor has a beautiful double-flowered camellia that I will be trying to propagate the same way.

Here in the Keys we can take a fresh plumeria cutting and literally just stick it in the ground and off it goes.

Plumerias also root in water. It can take many months, and should be changed frequently.

Yes, but can grow them in the same yard as lilacs? Love my zone 8b for it's flexibility.

I do wish I lived in a fantasy version of the Keys that wasn't part of the State of Florida tho.

Yea, there is that Florida issue but the Keys really are not like anywhere else in the state. I hate the rest of it for a whole bunch of reasons.

I love lilacs too and if it doesn't get hot there may still be a few in bloom when I get north. The only issue I have with those is I start sneezing if I get anywhere near them but I still love the fragrance.

No particular plumeria favorite. Just cuttings we get offered from around the neighborhood. Mostly yellows and reds. There is one in particular that I like tho. It's yellow and white but the best part is the thing ALWAYS has flowers on it.

The plumeria are all leafing out, now to try my hand at rooting roses. I am obsessed with fragrant floribunda roses (the perfect rose IMO).

This dovetails nicely with my recent obsession with Wendy's Classic Chicken Combo, upsized to get these perfect cultivators for my cutting forays.

Also luckily, there is an old Presbyterian church with a huge collection of label floribundas. The best time to take rose cuttings are when the first flush is done and canes are semi hard, which is serendipitous because that is the time to prune back.

Hahaha Clawhammer. I didn't know people in the PNW were allowed to like fast food. Sounds more like something a Floridian would say. :D

I'm always for a laugh at the expense of my friends in Florida. Definitely harder to find fast food here, and generally a poor choice compared to our excellent local fare, but i will defend the Classic Chicken Combo til my dying breathe. Did y'all know you can swap the fries for a baked potato? You're welcome. :rofl:
